- If out lines where 3000 Hz lines, we wouldn't even be seeing 28.8
- connections, let alone 33.6 connections, fortunatly though, they aren't
- (at least most aren't). Now, 33.6 connections do seem to be extremely
- rare in North America at least (in some areas of Europe they seem to be
- the norm), but they ARE possible if you're phone line has enough usuable
- bandwidth for the 3429 symbol rate (baud rate) and a good enough S/N
- ratio. Apperently AT&T did a study that found that 10% of the lines in
- North America did meet those critiera, but that may be a somewhat
- misleading figure since some of those 10% could be on lines that you'll
- never find in normal use. In any case, 31.2 connections do not seem to be
- as bad, and they can be made with the 3200 symbol rate or the 3429 symbol
- rate (ie they require less bandwidth then 33.6 connections). Quite a few
- people reguarly make 31.2 connections. The annex to v.34 also adds a
- couple more options, one of which will push the maximum connect rate up by
- one 2400bps step for all symbol rates except the 2400 one. Now, of
- course, if limited bandwidth isn't your problem this won't help you, but
- it will help some people. The annex also adds seamless rate renegotiates,
- while the current v.34 spec only has semi-seamless (although very fast)
- rate renegotiates, which is nice since v.34 sometimes renegotiates the
- speed a lot, and even with v.34s very fast renegotiating it will lower
- throughput a little bit waiting for the modems to get going again.
